There are plenty of microphones out there that sound great, and when it comes time to purchase your own personal mic, the sheer number of choices can make it a daunting task. However, it is simply a matter of having a little knowledge and taking the time to audition them.
First, a little background on their construction. The mics will be of two basic types, either dynamic mics or condenser mics. Dynamic mics are more durable and less expensive than condenser mics, but either type should be auditioned to hear how it works with your voice. Especially today, there are many dynamic mics that are comparable to condensers at a fraction fo the price. When you look for a mic, see if you can find one made from neodymium magnets, which are lighter and more responive than traditional alnico magnets.
Things to consider. Here are some issues, outside of a mics sonic response that should be considered: Handling noise, feedback rejection, polar response, and durability.
Don't be afraid to ask your local music store for advice, and to audition mics from their display.
